Valley Sales Offers Fabrication, Machining and Welding Services

Valley Sales and Equipment, which opened in 1964 as a small welding shop, has grown to be a leader in the delivery of diverse services as a full-service fabrication, machining and welding facility, contributing to several high-profile projects.

In the early days, founder Ron Arbuthnot operated a small welding shop, working with smaller industries around town and many local farmers. Things weren’t easy at the start – a fire gutted the business in 1965 – but he rebuilt and persevered.

In the late 1960s Arbuthnot branched out to work for local mining companies, including Timminco Metals, Haley Industries, Dolomex and Consolidated Bathurst, and by the ‘80s he had added clients such as E.T.M Industries, Canadian Hydro Components, Scapa Tape, USS Manufacturing and Ottawa Valley Glass.

Valley Sales continues to work with these customers, and more recently, began serving the construction industry, including R.W.Tomlinson Ltd. Work for Tomlinson’s includes the fabrication and repairs of quarry equipment, paving equipment, concrete ready mix equipment, bridge parts and environmental sorting facilities.

Ron Arbuthnot says the enterprise added staff naturally as it grew. His son Steve joined the business in 1977 as a 16-year-old youth, and is now president.

The company has expanded its facility three times to accommodate its growing volume. The latest expansion turned what had been a small welding shop into a 25,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility.

Ryan Arbuthnot, Ron’s grandson, joined the family business in 2002 and came on full time in 2010 after completing his studies in mechanical engineering at the University of Western Ontario. Within a year he will be fully licensed and able to stamp drawings and, at that time, engineering services will become part Valley Sales and Equipment’s services.

In 2009, Valley Sales received the Lifetime Business Achievement award from the Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce. Along with three founding family generations, Valley Sales has many key employees who are just like family as well. Three employees have been with the company more than 20 years; two more than 15; and six have more than 10 years experience.

One of the company’s most important clients is Ottawa Valley Glass (OVG). “We do a lot with them – for a number of years, we have been fabricating custom parts and brackets that OVG require for the installation of their products.

OVG requires specific and specializedwork for its clients, and accordingly, as a supplier, Valley Sales and Equipment accommodates the unique requirements of each order. “Every job is custom work for them with specific needs and so each job is custom and specific to us as well.”

This service reflects the approach the company takes to all of its clients. “We take our client’s projects and problems and make them ours,” he says.

Valley Sales and Equipment works with clients in agriculture, automotive, equipment manufacturing, forestry, high tech, hydro generation, lighting, mining, transportation and more. The business is ISO 9001:2008 Certified and is certified to CSA Standard W47.1 with the Canadian Welding Bureau. For more information, visit www.valleysalesandequipment.com.
